Nuno Felt Workshop with Kathy Hays

The Nuno felting Workshop taught by Kathy Hays was attended by these members: Cheryl Martin, Nancy David, Betsy Meyer, Eileen Dykstra, Lori Stone, Roberta Miller, Kathy King, Marsha Kaszuba, Shawn Woods, Patsy Monk, Pat Fox, Adrianne Coloton, Judy Merick, Anne McCunney, Carol Anderson, Kendra Drobnak, Laura Reed and Kim Sherrod during Play Day March 22, 2009.
	Kathy Provided us with 3 types of fabric to laminate with wool. The yellow was dyed scrim, blue was chiffon and magenta was silk organza.


	Once we laid down a fine layer of wool roving on the bubble wrap we got busy layering the scrim, chiffon and organza on top. After that we added some soapy water and gently patted it to make sure it was thoroughly saturated.

	Some of our members mixed their colors to obtain a higher contrast.

	Using one long piece of bubble wrap we laid each wool and fabric combo in a row.

	Once it was determined to be wet enough, we rolled it up and tied the bubble wrap with two pieces of knee high hose. This was when all the felting aerobics began!

	We rolled them 100 rolls and then untied it and rerolled it and retied it starting at the opposite end. After another 100 or so rolls we were ready to unroll it from the noodle and bubble wrap and take each wool laminate and roll it up in a bamboo sushi mat and give it 20 or more rolls to full the felt.

	After each piece was pinch tested and held up to check to make sure the fibers were showing on the opposite surface we gently held them in our hands and rolled them, "like baby birds" and suddenly the samples looked wrinkled and textured and it was pronounced a successful workshop!

	Kathy also had kits for sale and I know I will be working on mine sometime soon! It was great to learn a new technique and to have fun with fellow Surface Design Members.

	I used my yellow scrim and brown wool laminate to make a wee elf coat. It was great to learn the process, although it was physically a lot of work, I think the end result is worth it.
